How it works

  1. Measure each player's value: goals above replacement in hockey, VORP in basketball.
  2. Plot it against the share of the salary cap he takes up.
  3. Fit the league's market-rate line: what each slice of cap usually buys.
  4. Add up how far each roster sits above or below that line.

The numbers

GMARGM value Above the Rate: how much more (or less) a roster produces than its payroll should buy.
GSATGreatest Season of All Time: a season's GMAR in standard deviations from that year's average GM, so years compare fairly.
Self-BuiltHow much of a roster the GM actually chose versus inherited (NHL).
